Yes, it’s true. They uninstall apps they do not want to use or like. This may be disheartening for some Android app developers, but it’s the reality of the app market. There are more than 2.7 million apps on Google Play and, 2.2 million apps on Apple’s iOS App Store. These are indeed the big numbers, but when it comes to the numbers of users actually installing and using apps, they are pretty small. A new study on the mobile app usages says that people interact with a small number of third-party apps on the routine basis. The study reveals that only one in four mobile users installing an app regularly use it. Rest ones either uninstall the downloaded app or do not use it at all.
The analytics firms Localytics conducted a study on 37,000 apps and found that there has been a slight increase of 4 percent in the retention apps between years 2015 and 2016. It was 34 percent in 2015 year and in 2016, it reached only to 38 percent.
Although things seem to be improve every year but numbers aren’t too good. It clearly indicates that 62 percent of users will use an app less than 11 times. Is it called a sustainable business model? As of the study conducted in 2016, 23 percent of users launch an app only once which is a slight improvement from the 2014 year when 23 percent of users were abandoning apps.
Even iOS apps don’t show a heavy retention rate. 26 percent users opened apps once last year, but now it has decreased only to 24 percent. There is slight improvement in the number of those users who return to their apps. 32 percent users were returning to apps 11 times more and now, they have increased to 36 percent.
The report also notated that retention and abandonment have affected the apps with their middle stage of growth. They are those apps which received between 15,000 and 50,000 monthly users. This is the attributed apps’ use of in-app messages, push notifications, email and, remarking. In-app messages improve user-retention to 46 percent while push notifications do also retain users to some extend according to the report. In app messages are a bit helpful. The 17 percent of all users will use an app once in a day if the app uses in-app messages, but the 26 percent of all users will abandon the app just after a single session if they don’t see any in-app message. An in-app message increases the engagement of users with the app.
So how things can be improved and, how app-ventures can become sustainable.
First of all, app developers will need to use analytics tools to discover where users are abandoning their apps. They have to find that how these places users are bounding from can be improved by making changes. They will also need to look at the competitors getting good installs.
The app stores of different platforms will also need to make the app-installation process a bit simpler so that users can have the preview of an app before actually downloading it. Google has already made available the support for this purpose. The devices, running Jellybean version of the OS in, have the capability to instantly use an app without even downloading it locally. It happens almost immediately, just by clicking the related URL. But, Google alone is the not the market player. iPhone and iPad devices are also used by a large users group and thus, Apple too needs to implement something similar.
